Five years... already!
Yes. It is hard to believe that on August 3, 2010 we celebrated our five year anniversary at Black Swamp Quilt Shoppe. During this time we have grown from a virtually empty 1200 square foot front room to over 3000 square feet. We carry a large selection of cotton fabrics, featuring batiks, Civil War reproductions, and trendier prints; Hand-dyed wool by the owner, Allison Gollehon, was added in January of 2007 which is mainly used for wool applique and wool rug hooking. In March of 2009 we were honored to add the highest quality sewing machine brand, Bernina, to our list of offerings.

On quite a regular basis we are asked, "Why did you name your shop, Black Swamp Quilt Shoppe?" The Great Black Swamp  is the area of northern Ohio that stretches west to east from Indiana to Sandusky, Ohio (approximately 140 miles) and is approximately 30 miles in length from Lake Erie south to Bowling Green, Ohio. Known now for its very fertile farm land, the Black Swamp was just that, a treacherous frozen swampy mass of muddy water in the winter and a mosquito breeding swamp ground in the summer. A drive on the back roads of Wood County will immerse you in a patchwork of square miles being separated by 14 feet deep ditches that were hand dug by the settlers to drain the murky swamp. Being someone interested in local history, and nature, the name was a good fit. A tree frog (not indigenous to the area, but more colorful than a bull frog) was added to our logo because bull frogs are a permanent fixture in this area. If you've ever heard Toledo being referred to as "Frog Town", but aren't sure why, just spend a night in one of the counties that was once the swamp and listen to the bull frogs chirping during the night.
